European Region Research

The Research

A rigorous, long-term academic study of identity in Europe's regions and nations.

What we study

Identity in all its dimensions

The project investigates how citizens perceive their regional, national and European identities β€” whether these identities are experienced as complementary or competing, and the degree to which people seek autonomy for their region or nation. It covers cultural belonging, linguistic identity, political attitudes toward self-governance, and the relationship between regional and supranational identities.

Methodology

Scientific surveys, longitudinal comparison

Each survey is developed according to established standards in survey research, with questionnaires adapted to the cultural and linguistic context of each region. The same core indicators are used across regions and over time, allowing for meaningful comparisons. Surveys are conducted on the Unipark platform, which meets the highest standards for data security and academic survey research.

Long-term perspective

A unique, growing dataset

Unlike one-off studies, this project follows regions over multiple years. This longitudinal approach reveals how identities evolve over time, enabling the detection of trends that cross-sectional surveys cannot capture.
